what you can buy with bitcoin

Cryptocurrency may be the new money system on the block, but it already has some cool-kid connections in the businesses below that accept it. Some operations accept cryptocurrency themselves; others use a third-party service, like Bitpay, so they don’t have to deal with exchange rates. Either way, cryptocurrency can buy you a vast array of goods. So if you think of Bitcoin as more than an investment and would like to put it to use, here are just a few of the products you can buy with Bitcoin.

Local Businesses That Accept Bitcoin

We won’t go into much depth for this category because what’s local to one person is across the nation for another, but you’d be surprised at the number and breadth of small local businesses who accept Bitcoin. You can even filter Yelp results by “accepts cryptocurrency payment.” Here’s a small sample of what you can buy.

Coffee at 787 Coffee Co. in New York City.

Comic books at The Multiverse in Fort Worth, Texas.

Wedding flowers and other services at Sierra Bridal and Blooms in Incline Village, Nevada.

Online Businesses That Accept Bitcoin

Bitcoin is a digital currency, not a physical one, so it makes sense that businesses who are also primarily digital, rather than brick-and-mortar, are early adopters of cryptocurrency transactions. If you want to spend your hard-earned (or not-so-hard-earned) cryptocurrency online, here’s just some of what you can buy with Bitcoin.

Home wares on Overstock. Many ask if Amazon accepts cryptocurrency. It doesn’t, but Overstock has jumped on the Bitcoin bandwagon!

Charming handmade items on Etsy. Not all vendors on Etsy accept cryptocurrency, but they can if they want to, and many do!

That warm, fuzzy feeling by donating to the Wikimedia Foundation. Their Wikipedia website may be free to use, but it’s a big operation that needs funding. So if you appreciate the information they supply, consider donating in cryptocurrency.

Bitcoin-Friendly Big-Ticket Items

Those who spend rather than hoard their cryptocurrency (we make no judgement either way), typically buy pricier items over smaller purchases. Here are some of the priciest purchases you can make.

An MSc in digital currency from the University of Nicosia in Cyprus. Classes are online, but we’re sure you can find a reason to visit this university on a Mediterranean island…

A Lamborghini at Lamborghini Newport Beach in Costa Mesa, California. This dealership started accepting Bitcoin in 2013 and has noticed that purchases in cryptocurrency spike when Bitcoin’s worth spikes.

A trip to outer space onboard a Virgin Galactic spaceship. That’s right. Use your Bitcoin to orbit the Earth.

Seeing as it’s hard to top a trip to outer space, we’ll end with these lists from other sources:

Converting Bitcoin to Cash

For those wanting to still make purchases with cash, you have several options for converting Bitcoin into cash. When you need physical cash, nothing beats the speed and simplicity of withdrawing cash using a Bitcoin ATM.
